Holotropic breathwork is a therapeutic practice developed by psychiatrist Stanislav Grof and his wife Christina Grof in the 1970s. It involves accelerated breathing techniques combined with evocative music to help participants access altered states of consciousness. This practice is often used for personal growth, emotional healing, and spiritual exploration.
During a session, participants typically lie down, close their eyes, and engage in deep, rapid breathing. The intention is to bypass the analytical mind and tap into deeper emotional and psychological layers. The experience can lead to profound insights, emotional release, and a sense of connection to oneself and the universe.
Holotropic breathwork is often conducted in a group setting, with trained facilitators guiding participants. It's important for individuals to feel safe and supported during the experience, as it can sometimes bring up intense emotions or memories.
